Intellectual Property Counsel

indie is an Autotech solutions innovator. We focus on edge sensors spanning multiple modalities including LiDAR, radar, ultrasound and vision for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles, connected car, user experience and electrification applications.

indie is building its in-house legal team and seeking an Intellectual Property Counsel to support the company’s legal needs. This position will have responsibility for the company’s intellectual property and patent program. This position will also assist with M&A and commercial contracts. Interest and experience with building and improving processes is highly valued. Title commensurate with experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop indie’s global intellectual property strategy in partnership with indie leadership

  • Build indie’s patent program and manage indie’s patent portfolio, including patent portfolio development, assessing patentability and enforceability of patent invention ideas

  • Manage disputes and litigation concerning IP and related licensing matters

  • Provide support to product development, product management and engineering teams on IP strategy and related licensing matters

  • Create IP-related policies, procedures, training programs, and playbooks

  • Offer counseling on IP and licensing related issues for new products and features

  • Provide support to corporate, M&A and operations teams on IP related matters

  • Review and manage indie’s relationships with outside counsel with respect to global intellectual property protection

  • Undertake other projects as required as part of a small but mighty legal team

  • JD degree

  • Registered U.S. Patent Attorney with background experience in electrical engineering

  • 12+ years of patent prosecution and IP experience at a top law firm or in-house; patent litigation experience preferred

  • Deep experience partnering with and providing support to executive leadership, engineering, product development, and product management teams is required

  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining a strategic and efficient patent program

  • Demonstrated experience leading IP-related transactions and in product development transactional work

  • Experience assessing IP portfolios and negotiating IP provisions in M&A context preferred

  • Strong technical background in semiconductors and interest in learning new technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to novel issues in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

  • Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with, and gain the respect of, stakeholders at all levels

  • Ability to adapt to and thrive in a dynamic environment of rapid growth, preferably in or with fast-paced tech driven companies

  • Excellent business sense and legal judgment, with the ability to be strategic as well as detail-oriented

  • Flexible and willing to approach legal challenges with an entrepreneurial mindset

  • Admitted to practice before a state bar, with active license in good standing
